91-year-old Derek Underdown is enjoying a room with a view at Fremantle Court nursing home in Stoke Mandeville, thanks to the creation of a beautiful mural landscape painted by his daughter Toni Standing.

Derek was responsible for the original design of Vox amps among other engineering feats throughout his career. Having spent time living overseas, he discovered a passion for fossils and minerals in Hong Kong and on returning to the UK in the early 1980s he joined Sussex Mineral and Lapidary Society.

Rosemary Hicks, an activity organiser at The Fremantle Trust, has been liaising with Toni, a member of Chilterns Art Group, to develop the idea of creating a mural with a fossil theme so it has personal significance for her dad.

The result is a stunning landscape depicting the Jurassic Coastline of Charmouth and surrounding areas, where Toni and her family have been on holiday and spent time hunting for fossils.

Commenting on this Toni said:

My dad loves the attention he’s been getting and is very proud. He enjoys looking at the mural from his bedroom and watched me paint it.

Antonios Loumousiotis, manager of Fremantle Court, added:

This was a wonderful thing for Toni to do for her father. He is understandably very proud of all the attention the mural is getting!
