Chef Manager, Home for Older People

I work as the Chef Manager in Fremantle's largest home for older people - providing meals for 108 residents every day and lunch for 30 day service members.
My first job as a cook was at the Hilton Hotel in London. I still think a lot about the attractive presentation of meals which was very important working in a hotel. After working for an agency for a couple of years I was asked to provide cover at Apthorp Lodge and quickly joined the permanent team. I have been here for more than 3 years now.
I have an NVQ level 2 in Food preparation and Cooking and I am currently working towards level 3 for which Fremantle is sponsoring me.
Food is very important in care homes. I like spending time to find out what individuals like and planning menus with the residents. There is always a choice of meals and I encourage the staff in the kitchen to meet individual preferences too. It is very satisfying when the service users enjoy a meal I have planned and prepared.
With 108 residents there are regular requirements for birthday cakes and special celebrations. Life in the kitchen is always busy but I really enjoy helping service users to live life to the full. I love getting compliments about the taste and presentation of the food.
